Season and environment modulate aquatic invertebrates’ responses to trout and indigenous fishes in three South African mountain streams

چکیده
Introduced organisms are seen as one of the greatest threats to resource sustainability worldwide, and aquatic macroinvertebrates regarded good indicators health water resources. To explore these two perspectives, responses macroinvertebrate faunas native introduced fishes in three headwater tributaries Keiskamma River system, South Africa, were examined by comparing potential indicator communities reaches considered be fishless, invaded salmonid species, containing fishes. Patterns faunal assemblage data driven strongly season flow rate, less presence insectivorous biotope availability, a finding parallel with several similar studies from region. This affirms that responsive both environmental biotic factors leaves room for further resolve effects non-native fish system other systems Africa.

Patterns of hybridization among cutthroat trout and rainbow trout in northern Rocky Mountain streams
Introgressive hybridization between native and introduced species is a growing conservation concern. For native cutthroat trout and introduced rainbow trout in western North America, this process is thought to lead to the formation of hybrid swarms and the loss of monophyletic evolutionary lineages. Previous studies of this phenomenon, however, indicated that hybrid swarms were rare except when...
متن کاملMechanisms Limiting a Vertebrate Invasion: Brook Trout in Mountain Streams
I used multiple approaches to study brook trout invasions in mountainous streams of Idaho and Montana, USA. After studying marked fish in experimental reaches and fish distributions throughout a drainage, I concluded that larger brook trout (95mm) moved more than smaller ones and were probably responsible for most dispersal leading to invasion. Contrary to earlier hypotheses, poor swimming abil...
متن کاملTerrestrial and aquatic invertebrates as bioindicators for environmental monitoring, with particular reference to mountain ecosystems.
The use of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates as a management tool for monitoring change in ecosystems is reviewed and critically evaluated. Their suitability and value for assessing a range of environmental problems from pollution impacts, through habitat evaluation for conservation to the long-term degradation and recovery of ecosystems, is critically discussed. Guidelines are provided for...

Aquatic Invertebrates
Animals are important and conspicuous elements inPacifi c Island ecosystems. They are crucial to the fl ow of energy and nutrients within ecosystems and they strongly infl uence, and in some cases control, the species composition and population structure of communities. Determining which animal species are present in an area and what they do is crucial to understanding how ecosystems function a...
